Bug zappers are great for eliminating flying insects, but do they really work? Well it depends what you are using them for. If you are using them to significantly reduce the insect population of your yard then they are amazing.
If you are using them to only eliminate biting bugs they are not as effective without an attractant.
According to Alberto Broce, a professor of entomology, “zappers only kill a small percentage of insects that are annoying or damaging to human health.”
The word annoying is quite subjective, I personally find any flying insect to be annoying especially when it keeps landing in my sitting area and flying around me constantly. In this case a bug zapper works like a charm. If you want it it to truly be effective against mosquitoes you will need to use an attractant with it.
Bug zappers use light to work so they are not as effective during the day since they have to compete with the sun. Frankly, no light source is strong enough to compete with the sun.
Bug Zappers by design attract insects to them, so you will want to place the bug zapper at least 25ft away from the place you plan on spending your time.
You will need to check the manufacturer’s recommendation for the most accurate answer, however, in general any bug zapper made for outside use are also weather resistant.
You should definitely be aware of any extension cords you having running out to your bug zapper and keep the plug and socket out of the water.
Mosquitoes are more attracted to carbon dioxide than they are too UV light.
If you want to attract mosquitoes to your bug zapper you will want to use a mosquito lure such as Octenol or Lurex3.
Octenol is a chemical that is found in human breath and sweat that is quite effective at attracting most mosquitoes.
Lurex3 mimics “naturally occurring human skin scents” and is especially effective at attracting “Asian” tiger mosquitoes. Unfortunately, it can only be used with the Mosquito Magnet Trap.
Any bug zapper that can use an attractant will work great as a mosquito killer, however, our personal favorite is the Flowtron Electronic Insect Killer.
The Flowtron Electronic Insect Killer is great for ridding your outside living area of mosquitoes and other flying insect pests. It uses a 15-watt high intesity ultraviolet bulb to attract flying insects to it. Best used with a Octenol attractant, or more simply put a mosquito lure.
